Top things to do when you visit Bergamo-2021 Full Travel Guide,Insider Tips, activities, tours, hotels

Bergamo is a city in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, approximately 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Milan, The Bergamo Alps begin immediately north of the city. With a population of around 120,000, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy. The metropolitan area of Bergamo extends beyond the administrative city limits, spanning over a densely urbanized area with slightly less than 500,000 inhabitants.

We decided to spend Christmas 2021 in Italy, Bergamo with my husband’s family. So we drove from Munich by car and drove almost 6 hours until we reached our destination. Honestly when we left the small town where my husband’s relatives live, to go to Bergamo, we were very pleased with the wonderful Christmas decorations that were everywhere in the city. We were glad that we chose this time of year to visit this beautiful city.If you will visit the city by car,be careful at the ZTL zones! The fees are quite high and is better to be informed about them.More informations you can find here!

We started by visiting the city center and our first tourist attraction was Capella Colleoni. It is also known by other names, such as Santa Maria Maggiore or Bergamo Cathedral.

The Cappella Colleoni in the old town of Bergamo is a burial chapel commissioned by the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni in 1471. The elaborately designed chapel is an outstanding testimony to the Lombard architecture of the 15th century. It contains the tombs of the mercenary leader Colleoni (1400–1475) and his daughter Medea, who died in 1470 at the age of twelve.

Then on our way to another beautiful church we passed the Central Station. Here are some pictures:

This is the Church we visited:ST. Peter Paul Apostolis.

Here is an interesting place right near the city center where you can go and have some fun if you have kids!

We wanted to visit the old town but before that,we had to visit one more attraction:The Venetian Walls.

The Venetian walls of Bergamo are an imposing architectural construction dating back to the sixteenth century, well preserved as they have not suffered any war events over the centuries. This enclosure consists of 14 bulwarks, 2 floors, 32 sentry boxes (of which only one has come down to us), 100 openings for guns, two powder cases, and 4 doors.

Porta San Giacomo is perhaps the most beautiful of the access gates from the Venetian walls to the upper city of Bergamo, it was built in 1592, it is the only one in pinkish white marble from the Zandobbio quarry in Val Cavallina.

Immediately after visiting these beautiful attractions of Bergamo, we set off for the old town. And here we want to offer you a tip: Be very careful on the streets when you go to the old town, because there are certain hours when you are allowed to enter by car, and if you’re not careful the fines are quite high.

So now we will delight you with the second part of our trip to Bergamo:The Old Town.

Top hotels we recommend in Bergamo:Le Funi Hotel ,Hotel Piazza Vecchia ,Hotel Excelsior San Marco .

We managed to find the best two companies that offer hotels, holiday homes and transportation. These are: and Vrbo. We have already tested these companies, we were very satisfied and we warmly recommend them.

After we parked the car and paid the fee of 1 euro per hour,we set off for the wonderful Old Town. These are some pictures we have taken on the way:

After this wonderful walk we finally reached the Old Square-Piazza Vecchia.

It was the seat for many centuries of the political and civil activity of the city. The square was connected by the portico of the Palazzo della Ragione with the Sancti Vincentii platea, which became the Piazza del Duomo.

After such a beautiful walk we decided to stop at a beautiful cafe where we enjoyed the italian coffee and their nutella croissants.

On our way back to the car, we could see the city from above, but unfortunately it was foggy and we couldn’t see everything very clearly.

These were the tourist attractions we visited in this beautiful city, and we believe that none should be missed if you will visit Bergamo. If you liked our guide, read about our Full Travel Guide for the city of Milan 2021.
