Discover Bangkok Thailand - The Best Travel Guide 2023

In September 2019 we decided to make a round trip to Asia and we found at Lidl Holidays, a very good offer. We found a round trip to visit 3 countries: Cambodia, Vietnam and Bangkok Thailand for 12 days with all visits included and breakfast .We paid 1300 euros per person and honestly I did not have high expectations from hotels considering that these countries are quite poor. Surprise, however! Lidl company exceeded all expectations, we had some beautiful hotels and rooms in this trip, and the breakfast was always rich and tasty.

Things to do

We left Cambodia for Bangkok and after a rather tiring bus trip and a long queue at the border we managed to reach our 5 star hotel, which was impressive. As I said, we had very good conditions at the hotels .In Vietnam and Cambodia we had visits included, but in Bangkok we was 3 days on our own, no visits included and as usual we tried to visit everything we could.

The first day we took the taxi in front of the hotel to Siam park, an amusement and water park outside the city. The price of the taxi was very ok and fair, but on the way back we kind of regretted the decision to go so far because taxi drivers from the park had colossal prices when they heard that we was going to a 5 star hotel. We were lucky with a Thai lady who helped us get a price that was a bit ok. This is why we recommend you to pick this tour with transport so will have no problems. These are our memories from the Siam Park:

Siam Park

Siam Park City is an amusement and theme park in the Khan Na Yao district of Bangkok, Thailand. It opened in November 1980.

In the evening we headed to Neon Night Market, and again be careful not to take a taxi directly in front of the market, better walk a little and then take one.

The second day we visited the Grand Palace and the temples of Wat Saket and Wat Benchamabophit:

The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace was the official residence of the Kings of Siam in Bangkok from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. After the death of King Ananda Mahidol in 1946 at Borom Phiman Palace, King Bhumibol Adulyadej decided to move the residence to Chitralada Residence of Dusit Palace.

Wat Benchamabophit

Wat Benchamabophit is a Buddhist temple in the Dusit district of Bangkok, Thailand. It is also known as the “Marble Temple”. It will also become a tourist attraction. In 2005, Wat Benchamabophit was proposed by UNESCO for the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity.

On our last day of our 12-day trip, we decided to make the most of what Bangkok has to offer and visited Lumphini park and the most famous temples: Wat Arun, Wat Phra, Wat Suthat and Wat Pho. In the evening we had dinner on a beautiful cruise ship and had spectacular views over the city at night.

Lumphini Park

Lumphini Park is the largest park in central Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. It is located in Pathum Wan district and is itself a sub-district of this district.

Wat Pho is a First Class Royal Temple, a Buddhist temple located in the center of historic Bangkok, just south of the Royal Palace. Wat Phra Kaeo

Temple of the Emerald Buddha, official name Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram, is the temple of the king in the old royal palace in Bangkok.

Wat Phra Kaeo

Wat Suthat

Wat Suthat is a Buddhist temple in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Covering an area of about 40 hectares, it is one of the largest temples in Bangkok. King Rama I had it built for a Buddha statue from Wat Mahāthāt in Sukhothai, the eight meter tall Buddha Shakyamuni.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho is a First Class Royal Temple, a Buddhist temple located in the center of historic Bangkok, just south of the Royal Palace. Since Wat Photharam was already mentioned in the Ayutthaya Chronicle during the reign of Phra Petracha, it may have been founded in the 17th century. King Rama I restored and expanded the temple to establish his new capital, Bangkok, and gave it its current name. All other kings of the Chakri dynasty also expanded and restored this royal temple.

Getting Around

The best way to get around Bangkok is by Skytrain or Metro, which is fast, affordable and easily navigable for visitors. The city also offers an extensive network of buses, but these are prone to traffic jams, which the city is notorious for. Taxis are fairly cheap, but again, gridlock is a regular issue.

getting around Bangkok

Bangkok has two major train networks which are the fastest and most convenient ways to get around ‘new’ Bangkok (Silom, Sukhumvit and Siam Square).

The elevated BTS, also known as the Skytrain , whisks passengers through ‘new’ Bangkok. It also has a link to the airport. The interchange between the two lines is at Siam station and trains run frequently from 6am to midnight. Fares range from 16B to 52B or 140B for a one-day pass.

Tips for taking a taxi in Bangkok

Never agree to take a taxi that won’t use the meter; usually these drivers park outside hotels and in tourist areas. Simply get one that’s passing by instead.

Once they’ve agreed to ply a route, Bangkok taxi drivers will not usually ‘take you for a ride’ as happens in some other countries; they make more money from passenger turnover.
