Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel, located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, on a 2,430-metre (7,970 ft) mountain ridge. The Colca Valley is a gorge near Chivay in Peru, 97 km north of Arequipa. Cañón del Colca, after the Tara Gorge in Montenegro at 1,300 m is the third deepest canyon in the world. From a geological point of view, the Cañón del Colca is less than 100 million years old to be considered young. Rock paintings and caves, in which the so-called “colcas”, containers for storing grain, were once kept, bear witness to the past of the Collagua culture; of the original inhabitants of the region.

Sacsayhuamán

The ruins of the Inca fortress Sacsayhuamán are today one of the most important sights from the Inca period and are located on the outskirts of the Peruvian city of Cuzco. It is about 3 km above the city center.During the Spanish conquest, the facility was partially destroyed, and the building structure has since been further damaged by earthquakes.According to Pedro Cieza de León, 20,000 people are said to have worked on it during the 70-year construction period in the second half of the 15th century.

The Inca complex Moray is a complex consisting of several terraces at different heights. It was built in three larger natural sinkholes of different depths. It is possible that Moray served the Incas as an agricultural experimental field to study the influence of these microclimates on plant growth.

Tambomachay is a water sanctuary about 8 kilometers north of Cusco in Peru. The facility, located at an altitude of 3700 m, dates from the Inca period. Water pours in canals over four terraced levels. The complex is well developed for tourism and can be viewed for a fee from a parking lot on 28B. In the immediate vicinity on the other side of 28B is the ruin of the small Inca fortress Puka Pukara. A farming village about 10 km away is also called Tambomachay.
