Things to do

In the middle of October 2021, on a sunny Saturday, we set off with our children to Innsbruck. We can tell you that from the road, when we were near the city we were delighted by the beautiful mountains we saw.

Bergisel

The Bergiselschanze is a ski jump on the Bergisel in Innsbruck, Austria. The architect of the ski jump is Zaha Hadid. The tower houses a viewing restaurant and a viewing platform, which are accessible for an entrance fee and accessed with an inclined elevator.

Innsbruck Nordkette

The Innsbruck Nordkette cable cars in Tyrol open up the Nordkette, the southernmost mountain range of the Karwendel. They lead in three sections from downtown Innsbruck, via the Hungerburg district, to the Seegrube station and on to the Hafelekar mountain station. Section 1, from Innsbruck’s old town to Hungerburg, is accessible via the “Hungerburgbahn” cable car, sections 2 and 3, to the Seegrube station and to Hafelekar, via two cable cars with a total of three cabins.

Swarovski Crystal Worlds

The Swarovski Crystal Worlds are a world of experience designed by André Heller on behalf of the crystal glass manufacturer Swarovski, consisting of a park, art museum, shop and restaurant. They opened in 1995 and are located in Wattens, near Innsbruck in Tyrol, the company’s headquarters and place of foundation.

Roman Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Court Church is located in the center of Innsbruck, on the edge of the old town. It is also called the Franciscan Church or Schwarzmander Church. It was built between 1553 and 1563 as the site for the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I. However, the monarch, who died in 1519, had himself buried in the castle of Wiener Neustadt. The Hofkirche is connected to the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum and is one of the five houses of the Tyrolean State Museums.

Triumphal Gate

Luckily for us we managed to park close to the old city, free of charge. We started towards the center, and on our way we met the first tourist objective, namely the Triumphal Gate, that is one of the most famous sights of Innsbruck. It is located at the southern end of today’s Maria-Theresien-Straße, at the time the southern exit of the city.

The Triumphal Arch is one of the most famous sights in Innsbruck. It is located at the southern end of today’s Maria-Theresien-Strasse, at that time the southern end of the city. This triumphal arch was built in 1765 on the occasion of the marriage of Archduke Leopold, the second son of Empress Maria Theresa and Franz Stephan of Lorraine, to Spanish Princess Maria Ludovica on August 5, 1765.

Triumphal Gate

What we liked about the city of Innsbruck is that you just have to go in a straight line to the Goldenes Dachl to see the vast majority of tourist attractions. From there you turn right and see the rest. Quite simple, but there is also some beautiful places, hidden by tourists. We are happy to have discovered one of them. We will reveal this place later in this article.

Science Center

The AUDIOVERSUM is a science center in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria, which makes scientific connections and medical-technical developments in hearing implant technology interactively tangible and understandable. The aim is to provide more information about the importance of hearing for communication, quality of life and human development. The exhibits are interactive, enable self-determined learning, require no previous knowledge and have a playful component.

Maria Theresien Straße

Maria-Theresien-Strasse, named after Empress Maria Theresia, is a wide, slightly curved boulevard and shopping street and a central street in Innsbruck that dates back to the first city expansion in the 13th century. It is one of the busiest streets in the city.

City Tower

Then, we saw the the city tower that stands in the middle of the historic center of Innsbruck, at Herzog-Friedrich-Straße 21.

Anna Column

The Anna Column is located in Innsbruck’s Maria-Theresien-Straße. It got its name in 1703 after Anna Day, when the last of the Bavarian troops that had invaded Tyrol as part of the War of the Spanish Succession were driven out. In 1704, the provincial estates vowed to erect a memorial in gratitude. This was created by the Trentino sculptor Cristoforo Benedetti from red Kramsach marble.

Goldenes Dachl

The Golden Roof is a late Gothic oriel on the Neuer Hof in Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse in Innsbruck’s old town and is a symbol of the city. The roof of the bay window was covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles.

Goldenes Dachl

Hölbling house

Right there, near the Golden Roof is the Hölbling house.

Is a building located in the Old Town section of Innsbruck, Austria, across from the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) at Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 10. The original structure was built in the fifteenth century, but evolved significantly with new architectural styles in subsequent centuries. Originally constructed as townhouses, Helbling House was shaped by its early Gothic styles and Baroque façade.

Hofburg Innsbruck

After seeing these tourist attractions, we turned right, and immediately arrived at the Hofburg Innsbruck, that is a residence built and inhabited by the Habsburgs. Originally a castle from the late Middle Ages, it was expanded into a castle in the early modern period and was the seat of the Tyrolean sovereigns and the residence of various members of the dynasty until the founding of the republic in 1918. The current state is based on the rococo-style extensions under Empress Maria Theresa and can be partially visited.

Hofburg Innsbruck

From Hofburg, if you continue on the street directly in front you will find a very beautiful church:

Church in Innsbruck

From the Church, we returned to the Hofburg and turned left towards Nordkette and saw the Theater.

Landesteather Innsbruck

The Tyrolean State Theater is in Innsbruck. The large house has about 800 seats. The Kammerspiele as a second venue are housed in the neighboring Haus der Musik. The program includes plays, operas, operettas, musicals and dance theatre; the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra is responsible for the music.

Landesteather Innsbruck

St. Jacob's Cathedral

From the Theater, going straight ahead, and then turn left under a tunel, we arrived at St. Jacob’s Cathedral, that is the cathedral or the bishop’s seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Innsbruck. In front of the cathedral there is a small park where you can sit on the bench and admire the view.

Now we will reveal the wonderful place that my husband discovered near this cathedral and that many tourists did not know about, because they where asking around but some could not reach it. If you go from the Theater directly in front and you don’t turn left towards the cathedral, you reach the Inn river which offers you some formidable, fairytale views. Most of the tourists didn’t know about it. Nobody came there while we admired the beautiful views.

Inn Bridge

The Inn Bridge, also known as the Old Inn Bridge, is a road bridge over the Inn in Innsbruck, connecting the old town on the right with Mariahilf-St. Nicholas on the left bank. The first bridge at this point was built in the 12th century, it gave the city of Innsbruck its name and can also be found in the city coat of arms. Until the Mühlauer Bridge was built in 1581, it was the only Inn bridge in the Innsbruck area.

Ambras Castle

From here, we returned to the car and from there we drove to Ambras Castle. It is the only federal museum of the Republic of Austria located outside the federal capital. At its core, it contains the collections of one of the most important collectors of the Habsburg dynasty: Archduke Ferdinand II. The museum is housed in Ambras Castle, a three-part Renaissance palace complex consisting of the Ambras Lower Castle, the Ambras High Castle and the Spanish Hall.
