Blue Lake

The Blue Lake is a large, monomictic, crater lake located in a dormant volcanic maar associated with the Mount Gambier maar complex. Of the four lakes, only two remain, as the other two (Leg of Mutton and Brown) have dried up over the past 30 to 40 years as the water table has dropped.

The bottom of the lake is 17 m (56 ft) below the level of the main street of the nearby town. The Blue Lake supplies the town with drinking water.

Granite Island

Granite Island is a small island next to Victor Harbor, South Australia, about 80 km south of South Australia’s capital city, Adelaide.

Although there are no permanent residents, there are buildings and shelters on the island, including a cafe. It is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for people wishing to see little penguins (commonly called “fairy penguins”) which live there. The island also supported resident wallabies in the 1980s which captivated visiting tourists. The private company Oceanic Victor uses the island as a departure point to ferry tourists to an at-sea, floating aquarium in adjacent waters.

Semaphore Beach

Semaphore beach is deep and white and backed by low dunes rather than tall buildings, so you get a sense of being miles from anywhere.

Semaphore Road is one of Adelaide’s widest boulevards and hosts a range of historical cafes and “old salt” pubs along with great shopping. You will find something different, something stylish and something quirky on Semaphore Boulevard.
