Things to do

Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls found at the foothills of Mountain Elgon just at the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan border. They are considered a tourist attraction by the locals, accounting for 10-20% of all tourists visiting Uganda every year.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

The Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in western Uganda. It has existed since 1952. The park has a size of 2056 km² and borders in the west on Lake Eduard and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the north on the Ruwenzori Mountains.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is a national park in northwest Uganda. The driveway is about 230 km from Kampala.It is known for Murchison Falls, where the Victoria Nile River surges through a narrow gap over a massive drop. Park wildlife includes elephants and hippos, and there are chimpanzees in the Kaniyo Pabidi mahogany forest. The Lake Albert Delta is home to rare shoebill storks. There are game fish in the cascades of Karuma Falls

Kibale National Park

The Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda near Fort Portal . Makerere University operates a biological station in the park.Kibale protecting moist evergreen rainforest. It is 766 square kilometers in size and ranges between 1,100 meters and 1,600 meters in elevation. Despite encompassing primarily moist evergreen forest, it contains a diverse array of landscapes.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is a protected area in the western part of Uganda and is 370 km² in size. In 1933 a Controlled Hunting Area was set up, which was elevated to a Game Reserve in 1963. Finally, in 1983, the national park was established. Members of the Hema used the grassland for their cattle even after the establishment of the national park.

Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is seven kilometers from the city of Kabale, in the Rubanda district in southwest Uganda. It is 25 kilometers long, seven kilometers wide and covers an area of 6100 hectares. The lake appeared from 2004 to 2009 on the 5,000 shilling bill of Uganda under the title “Lake Bunyonyi and terraces”.

The Ssezibwa falls are a result of water squeezing through narrow opening of rocks and dropping at great speed (17 meters) into a large pool that is about 14 meters deep

Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park is a national park 140 km northeast of Lake Victoria near the town of Mbale on the border between Uganda and Kenya. The park covers a total area of 1279 km², of which 1110 km² are in Uganda and 169 km² in Kenya. It lies at an altitude of 2336 to 4321 m above sea level. The highest point and namesake is the extinct volcano Mount Elgon.

Shopping in Uganda

Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja have the best selection of arts, crafts, curio shops and markets. In Kampala, Exposure Africa is the largest craft “village” in the city where you’ll find everything from drums and wooden carvings (go for carvings made from renewable woods rather than indigenous hardwoods) to sandals, baskets and jewellery, while the Friday craft market on Ggaba Road is a great place to browse handmade arts and crafts sold by the artisans themselves. Getting Around Uganda

One way to travel Uganda independently is by hiring your own car. Hiring a 4×4 is highly recommended, because most roads are unpaved and are often extremely bumpy and potholed, and most of the roads in the national parks are only suitable for 4x4s. However, driving on rough Ugandan roads is not for the feint hearted, and if you don’t have much experience driving in Africa it might be best to think about hiring a driver for your trip.

If you don’t hire a car, your options for getting around cities are shared taxi vans (known as matatus) and boda boda motorcycles (but note that both matatus and boda bodas have high accident rates). The safest option is to take private taxis (the taxi-ride app Uber operates in Kampala).

Getting to Uganda

You’ll be getting to Uganda through the only international airport in the country, Entebbe International Airport.
